Spinel is a gemstone with vivid colors that span the spectrum. Spinel can be red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet or purple. White, brown, black, gray, and colorless spinels also exist. It has a spectacular luster and excellent durability with a Mohs hardness of 8.
Spinel is named from the Latin word spinella, a diminutive form of spine, in reference to its pointed crystals.
In 2016 Spinel was named by the American Gem Trade Association and the Jewelers of America as birthstone for the month of August (sharing with the more traditional Peridot).
