Petrified Palm Wood (LA)

Beautiful golden semi precious gemstone Petrified Palm Wood, Palmoxylon, from Louisiana. These designer cabochons have tan and black areas and a great polka dot pattern! Some of the cabochons seem to have moonscapes or sceneries.

The name "petrified" comes from the Greek word petro, which means stone (or rock)-so it literally means stone-ified. Millions of years tree trunks were buried under several hundred yards of sediment. Often from a volcanic eruption. Over the course of time the wood was replaced by microcrystalline quartz. During the replacement process by silica carried in underground waters, even the most minute details of the woody structure was preserved.

Petrified Palm Wood is actually a psuedomorph-chalcedony replacing the wood. Therefore Petrified Palm Wood is a member of the chalcedony family with a hardness of 6.5 to 7. Petrified Palm Wood cabochons take a great polish and wear well.

Metaphysical Properties: Petrified Wood is called the stone of patience.
