Laguna Agate Cabochons

Laguna Agate cabochons are well known for their vibrant red colors!

The Laguna Agate area is in the Estacion Ojo Laguna area in the state of Chihuahua, about 150 miles south of the U.S.-Mexican border.

It is found in 13 different mine sites high in the mountains on the north to south mountain range covering a distance of over 4 miles.  Many of these mine sites are not accessible by road.

Laguna Agates are about 38 million years old.

The location was discovered in the late 1940's or early 1950's.  The Conejeros Mine was mined in 1995 with heavy equipment and large quantities of excellent quality was produced for about 8 years. About 6 of the other locations have also produced great quality.

Among agate collectors Laguna Agates are often considered to be the most colorful and beautiful agates in the world. 

Laguna Agate designer cabochons sometimes contain sagenites, moss inclusions and/or tube patterns.

Agate is a member of the chalcedony family, or a microcrystalline quartz, and Laguna Agate cabochons have a hardness of about 7 on the Moh's scale. The name is derived from its occurrence at the Achates River in southwestern Sicily.

Metaphysical Properties of Laguna Agate:

In general Agate cabochons are said to be stabilizing and strengthening. They improve memory and increase energy.
