Polka Dot Agate Blue Ice
Polka Dot Agate-Blue Ice, Blue Ice Agate, or Blue Ice Ocean Agate
This lovely pale blue semiprecious gemstone is found at the Polka Dot Agate mine near Madras, Oregon.
It comes from the same area as the well known Polka Dot Agate and indeed it does have polka dots!
Polka Dot Agate is so named for it's polka dot pattern. The dots in the agate range in size from very tiny up to about 1/4 inch across. Most of them are completely agatized, but some appear to be a soft iron oxide material similar to limonite or hematite. Most of the dots are sharp, concentric spheres. Others are spherical but with a slightly irregular outline.
This designer cabochon stone material, known as Blue Ice Agate or Blue Ice Ocean Agate is considered the HIGH GRADE of the Polka Dot Agate, because of its lovely translucent light blue color. Only about 5% of the Polka Dot Agate is High Grade enough to be called Blue Ice Agate.
The Polka Dot Agate mine was first worked by Native Americans and then later by the Priday family of Priday Ranch, and known for the famous Priday Agates. It was believed to be mostly mined out, so it was sold to a professor at Walla Walla College. It was owned by West Coast Mining since 1978. They opened it up and discovered a much larger deposit.
Recently it was sold to John Cooke. The Polka Dot Agate Mine is open to the public. On a limited schedule, you can visit the mine and you can purchase what you find!
Metaphysical Properties of Blue Ice Agate: In general Agate cabochons are said to be stabilizing and strengthening. It is believed they help improve memory and increase energy.
