What are designer cabochons?
A "cabochon" is described as a gemstone that is not faceted, but is cut into a convex and usually highly polished shape. The shape may be symmetrical, calibrated or freeform. Often times inexpensive or common stone materials are mass-produced into symmetrical or standard shapes or sizes, for instance the well known 30 mm by 40 mm oval. These are great for beginner jewelers as there are many pre-made standard settings for sale. They are also good for mass producers of jewelry.
Custom jewelers or wire wrappers demand more fancy cabochons. They want ring stones and pendant stones that are unique. These types of cabochons are usually referred to as designer cabochons . Cutting Designer Cabochons is definitely more difficult. Usually designer cabochons are cut from rare, or more expensive gemstone stones. Gems can vary greatly in hardness and stability and the designer cabochon cutters most know how to handle the different gemstone materials. Designer cabochons are cut in many different shapes; often the stone dictates those shapes, as the cutter will try hard to cut the best pattern from the material. Sometimes the shape is dictated by the market, what shapes or sizes are currently popular. Sometimes the fad is large jewelry and sometimes daintier pieces are more in demand. And some collectors will purchase designer cabochons without any intention to set them in jewelry. We have a great selection of very special extra large cabochons for those collectors!
