Uvarovite Garnet has a beautiful emerald-green color. The color is the result of the presence of Chromium in the molecular structure of the crystals.
As with the other calcium garnets (andradite and grossular), Uvarovite is formed from the metamorphism of impure siliceous limestones and some other rocks that contain chromium.
This material comes from the Saranovskiy Mine in the Ural Mountains, Russia.
Name Origin
It was named after Count S. S. Uvarov (1765-1855), Russian statesman and ardent amateur mineral collector.
This material is sometimes referred to as Green Drusy. Drusy (or druse) is a trade name for a natural surface coating of fine crystals that sparkle. Sometimes the crystals are quartz and those crystals will usually reflect the color of the mineral below. Sometimes the crystals may actually be of the same minerals that occured in the rock below.
Drusy stones truly make a "designer cabochon" as the material must be handcut to follow the crystals-so it is usually a freeform and very unique cabochon!
Metaphysial Properties: Uvarovite Garnet is said to heal the feeling of insufficency in all its aspects.
