Deschutes Jasper

Dechutes Jasper comes from a stone deposit a little east of Biggs Junction, Oregon, near the Deschutes River. This picture jasper deposit is now located in a State Park and will never be mined again. Most of it is now under a highway!

Jasper is an opaque form of chalcedony. It usually contains organic material and or mineral oxides such as iron oxide, which give it interesting colors and patterns. It is usually named for its colors or patterns, or for its location.

Jasper is a member of the chalcedony family and has a hardness of about 7 on the Moh's scale. Jasper cabochon have great wearability!
