Azurite is a very popular gemstone because of its unparalleled color, a deep royal blue called "azure", hence its name. Azure is derived from the arabic word for blue. Malachite's name is from the Greek, malache, "mallow" in reference to its green leaf color. The colors are due to the presence of copper (a strong coloring agent). Both of these minerals are copper carbonates and the material is usually found in major copper mines. The material used for these cabochons comes from the Morenci Copper Mine in Arizona.
Azurite has been used as a dye for paints and fabrics for eons. It is very similar in composition and often found with green Malachite. Malachite too, was crushed for pigment, and often used as make-up. Both materials ae soft, about a 4, and care must be taken when wearing or cleaning these cabochons.
Metaphysical Properties: Azurite is believed to stimulate intelluct as well as intuition, and is great for those studying new or challenging subjects. It blends well with Malachite or other copper ores. Malachite is a protective stone, especially during pregnancy and childbirth, and during flying and other travel. Using this stone, one can counteract self-destructive romantic tendencies and help encourage true love.
