Flame Agate Cabochons
Lovely red Flame Agate semiprecious gemstone cabochons.
Obviously named for its red and orange flame shaped inclusions!
Flame Agate has also been called Apache Flame Agate or Mexican Red Apache Agate.
Flame Agate was discovered in 1957 near Ejido El Apache in Chihuahua, Mexico and was worked by hand until 1963.
It is found on the Rancho la Vinata, and the agate location lies on top of a low, long hill, that is between two (usually) dry creeks.
It was worked with equipment by Benny Fenn in 1970, but it only yielded about 5% of good quality agate. The mine filled with water and the operation ceased. Mining occurred again several times, but the yield remained low and the water was a constant struggle.
The single most revered agate is the Hooded Owl and it is an Apache Flame Agate. It has a detailed image of a hooded owl sitting on a trunk or stone with a night sky or dark blue background.
This semiprecious stone cabochon material is also classified as a Plume Agate because of its plume like inclusions.
Agate is a member of the chalcedony family, or a microcrystalline quartz, and it has a hardness of about 7 on the Moh's scale and makes for great jewelry designer cabochons.
The name Agate is derived from its occurrence at the Achates River in southwestern Sicily and Agates are usually named after their location or their appearance.
Metaphysical Properties of Flame Agate: In general Agates are said to be stabilizing and strengthening. It is believed they help improve memory and increase energy.
