Bull Canyon Agate Cabochons

This pretty translucent semiprecious stone is Bull Canyon Agate.

It comes from a closed mining claim in Washoe, Nevada, near the Northern California/Nevada border area.

Bull Canyon Agate is a nicely translucent moss agate. The moss like inclusions are usually a bright red color, but can be green or brown.

This material is also known as a "tube agate". Tube Agate forms when flow channels are captured in the structure of the growing silica. The "moss" then appears as long tubes in the stone.

The rough was hauled in from the mine in the 1970's, unloaded on the former mine owners land and forgotten about. It was overgrown with 30 years of blackberries and the rock had to be dug out of the ground where it had sunk in.

The claim was forfeited/abandoned in 2003.

Agate is a member of the chalcedony family, or a microcrystalline quartz, and it has a hardness of about 7 on the Moh's scale. Agates make great gemstone cabochons for jewelry. The name Agate is derived from its occurrence at the Achates River in southwestern Sicily.

Metaphysical Properties of Bull Canyon Agate: In general Agate cabochons are said to be stabilizing and strengthening. They improve memory and increase energy.
